La evolución de la técnica fotográfica ha establecido qué y cómo se tendría que fotografiar, ha determinado en buena medida los temas y las orientaciones de los fotógrafos. En general, estos han sincronizado su paso con el de los sucesivos “avances” del medio.

Pero hay resistencias. Siempre las ha habido. Autores rebeldes que se niegan a seguir el compás dominante de la mayoría, que han adoptado como propios procesos en desuso o equipos anacrónicos. Y, sin embargo, obras como las de Sally Man o Nicholas Nixon, por citar solo un par de casos, bien podrían constituir incluso ejemplos de modernidad en el ámbito fotográfico.

¿Es posible hoy practicar una fotografía “a la contra”? ¿Qué recorrido puede tener? ¿Qué atractivo ofrece a las nuevas generaciones de fotógrafos y artistas? ¿Dónde están los límites de ese trayecto hacia atrás? ¿Son simplemente los estertores de tecnologías moribundas? ¿La manifestación de rebeldías sin horizonte? ¿El refugio personal donde instalarse apaciblemente?

The evolution of the photographic technique has established what and how it should be photographed, has determined the subjects and orientations of photographers. In general, most of them have synchronized their rhythm with the successive «advances» of the medium.

But there are resistances. There have always been resistences. Rebel authors who refuse to follow the dominant compass of the majority, who have adopted as their own processes in disuse or anachronistic equipment. And yet, works such as those of Sally Man or Nicholas Nixon, to mention only a couple of names, could well constitute examples of modernity in the photographic field.

Is it possible today to take a photographic way backward? What sense can it have? What appeal does it offer to the new generations of photographers and artists? Where are the boundaries of that backward journey? Are they simply the death rattles of a moribund technologies? A manifestation of rebellions without future? The personal refuge where to settle quietly?
